Shogun Show

The Mystical Shogun Kunitoki Strobe Light from Sami Sänpäkkilä

Just got turned on to Shogun Kunitoki, thanks to Nuno Correia. Hailing from Helsinki, the Finnish quartet kicks out psychedelic carnival music built from blazing organs, tambourines, and the occasional sitar. Play it loud enough and the room starts to spin, throwing you into an incense-soaked recreation room circa 1973.

The band’s declared mission is to help electronic music “regress back to a more human state, the time of the tube organ and the ring modulator, the spring reverb and the test oscillator” – it’s not just human, this is the beautiful time-bending stuff of deep dreams and nightmares.

Shogun Kunitoki plays tomorrow at Dubrovnik as part of the ongoing Pixelache festivities:

April 3 at 10pm
Pixelache Club at Dubrovnik
Eerikinkatu 11, Helsinki

Pretty cool. Music strongly reminds me of another band but cant quite place my finger on it.

Btw, meaning to ask. Do you collect vinyls james? I have purchased several over the last few years but my turntable is aweful. Any recommendations you might give me? Nothing manically expensive please :)

Saw their show last night – an amazing set complete with smoke machines, strobe lights, and grainy Super 8 film. They remind me of Ratatat on acid.

I used to collect a lot of vinyl, but I gave it all to a friend when I moved to the North Pole – although my habit had been winding down over the past few years because it’s difficult to deny the convenience of digital files. Sort of like moving away from my old Pentax 35mm camera.
