Big Growling Track

Phone booth in Grenoble, France
There’s a sound that I’m always looking for: that unhinged, snarling synth sound, like a mechanical monster gone mad in the basement. I first heard it on Kit Clayton’s “Belt Frictional Problem” and it’s why I fell hard for Stephen Bodzin in 2007. You can also hear it in Sébastien Léger’s “Fat Bug” and it’s all over the new Minilogue Animals LP, although in a more cartoony way. And Abstraxion’s new Six Eight EP has it in spades.
‘Chandler Bing’ kicks off with a big buzzy synth that digs right into your marrow and never sits still. It rips and snags and sounds absolutely alive before dropping into a dark and dirty classic Detroit groove that rings like an old DBX record filtered through the Dopplereffekt or Japanese Telecom mainframe. “Rubbish” kicks it up a few clicks with a more upbeat tempo and classic high-hat; “I Had a Good Time” sounds just like that: a slightly boozy hands-to-the roof vintage disco-funk beater. Not bad for a 24-year old Frenchman. Keep an eye on his Biologic imprint.
